Fernhill Rhondda Conservation Group are holding a public meeting on Thursday July 24, 7pm, at Blaenrhondda Social Club at the head of the Rhondda Valleys.

The purpose of the meeting is to disseminate the findings of a questionnaire which Fernhill Rhondda Conservation Group and local community members have undertaken. The questionnaire ascertains the community’s views on the proposed development for the Fernhill Colliery strategic site, as identified within Rhondda Cynon Taff Local Development Plan and at Cofton’s (the proposed developers and landowners) recent public exhibition.

Organiser Sheryl Husband commented: “As you are probably aware the submission of an outline planning application by Cofton’s is imminent and there is much concern surrounding their development proposals within the local community. To date responses from some 300 plus questionnaires have been collated. They indicate a strong consensus of opinion towards a more leisure and tourism orientated development. This is your opportunity to come along as our elected representatives and observe / assess the strength of feeling on the issues relating to this development which the community feel are important, we would appreciate it if you could make every effort to attend.”

Ten days behind schedule Cofton’s have finally released their plans for Fernhill on-line. Full details can be found at www.fernhilldevelopment.co.uk

Sheryl Husband is the co-ordinator of a new group set-up to look after the conservational interests of Fernhill.

“We believe the site is a beautiful cultural and historical asset to the valley. Our group wish to see the site developed sympathetically for leisure and tourism purposes. In addition, we are looking for ways to celebrate the beauty and value of the area, for instance, through photographs, sketches, paintings, stories, poetry, sharing memories or artefacts.

Whether you are an individual or group they are looking for people to help raise awareness of the plans for the area, recruiting supporters, networking, contacting organisations, distributing petitions, delivering leaflets, providing information/photos on the history of the site, help with website design, poster design, offering advice / guidance / expertise on planning / housing / ecological information etc.

Further information can be obtained by contacting Fernhill (Rhondda) Conservation Group, c/o Sheryl Husband, 36 Blaenrhondda Rd, Blaenrhondda, Treorchy, CF42 5SP.

Developers Cofton have delayed the launch of their ‘Fernhill’ website. The website promises to outline their plans for the Fernhill area along with artist impressions and detailed information. Initial set to be launched on Tuesday June 17 a spokesperson for Cofton’s said that the “website should be live by the end of the week.”
